PaperCutPortraits

What is a PaperCutPortrait? It's just what it sounds like. A portrait that is paper cut but a little more than that. It's representational because it is shadows and profiles of an individual with distinguishing marks or features that let's you identify who it is.
A PaperCutPortrait is similar to a silhouette cutting. A silhouette cutting is usually a profile consisting of an outline and a featureless interior. While a PaperCutPortrait is a continual cutting of the profile, either a side or a full front, with details.
When I am planning a PaperCutPortrait of either a relative or someone famous, I look at the shadows and features and try to eliminate everything that would make it a photograph or drawing. Then I have to decide whether the PaperCutPortrait will be a positive or a negative of the original.
Now the cutting begins. I generally use X-acto knives (look under tools and tips) with a number 11 or 15 blade. I cut the smallest inside details of the PaperCutPortrait first so the pieces do not tear. Keep in mind that the entire PaperCutPortrait is one pice of black (negative) or white (positive) paper. Now I work outward until all the cutting is done. I then back the PaperCutPortrait with theappropriate paper and take a good hard look at it. I must decide if it looks like the intended person. If there is enough detail so it doesn't look like a silhouette cutting and last, do I like what I see. I normally ask my wife because she is never afraid to tell me the truth. If all goes well, I proceed to create a 3-D effect by raising the PaperCutPortrait above the backing sheet and place it in a picture frame
