FABRIC CARDS
Who said that fabric was only for quilting or clothing or furniture? Guess what!!! You can use fabric to make wonderful and unique greeting cards. Fabric lends itself to all occasions because of the amazing array of colors and printed motifs. There is fabric for just about any occasion including Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and birthdays especially for children. Use the fabric as a background for your greeting cards. The colors and combinations are endless.
Fabric can be used in creating unique
greeting cards in several ways. As seen in the samples on this page: it can give your greeting cards a special and different look. Visit any fabric store or craft store that carries fabric and marvel at the amazing colors and patterns that are available and let your imagination run wild.
Here are two techniques that you can use to create fabric greeting cards.
TECHNIQUE #1
STEP 1) Cut a piece of cardstock ¼” smaller than the outside edges of the finished greeting card. A 5x7 folded size will accommodate the fabric nicely.
STEP 2) Cut the fabric about ½” larger than the smaller
piece of cardstock.
STEP 3) Glue the fabric onto the smaller cardstock using fabric glue or a gluestick. Cut angles at the corners of the larger fabric.
STEP 4) Now fold and glue the flaps onto the back of the cardstock. The angles that you cut should eliminate the fabric from bunching at the folded corners.
STEP 5) To reinforce the back edges, glue a piece of paper just a little bit smaller than the cardstock on the back. This should keep the folded fabric from unraveling.
STEP 6) Glue the fabric covered cardstock onto the face of your greeting card leaving about a ¼” space all around.
STEP 7) You can now add words or phrases or images to the front of the card by glueing them.
HINT: To keep the edges of the fabric from fraying or separating; try running a gluestick along the edges. This should glue the loose threads.
STEP 1) Glue the fabric onto the face of your greeting card leaving a ½” border larger than the face of the card on 3 sides only. The folded edge of the card will have no flap to glue. It will be cut right to the edge of the fold.
STEP 2) Fold over and glue the flaps to the inside of the greeting card duplicating steps 4 and 5 from Technique #1.
STEP 3) Don’t forget to glue that piece of paper to the inside of the card to reinforce the fabric flaps.
STEP 4) Now you can add your phrases or images to the front of your card.
HINT: Try using double sided mounting tape or a product called “3-D O’s to give a raised effect to the images or words.
Have fun creating new and unusual fabric cards. Remember that there are endless ideas locked up inside of you. Find the key and a new world of creativity will open up for you.
