CUTOUT CARDS

Here is another technique for making handmade greeting cards. Using brass and plastic stencils to make cutout cards is both unique and wonderful. Cutout cards lend themselves to many occasions so you are never limited. Let your imagination carry you away.

Brass stencils, as illustrated on this page, can not only be used for stenciling effects and dry embossing but for cutout cards as well. The stencils with larger openings are the best to use for cutout cards because they are the easiest to use with X-ACTO knives. The more skilled you become when using these knives, the more intricate the brass stencils can be; giving you more detailed cutout cards.

Stencils that are used for wall decorations or decorative country crafts can also be used for cutout cards. The technique is a little different but the same principles apply to the openings of the stencils. These stencils are often made of vinyl or plastic and greater care must be taken. The designs on both the brass and plastic stencils are extensive giving you an enormous supply of ideas for your cutout cards.

TECHNIQUE #1 using brass stencils

     1) place the stencil over the appropriate sized

cardstock you wish to use for your cutout card

     2) tape the corners of the stencil onto the cardstock

         using masking tape

     3) carefully place the tip of the X-ACTO blade on the

inside of the opening on the stencil and begin

         cutting slowly and carefully

     4) remove the stencil being careful not to tear the

         cardstock

     5) overlay the cutout card onto a slightly larger piece

         of cardstock or decorative paper

     6) glue the pieces together and then glue onto the

face of the cutout greeting card

HINT: If you find that cutting the opening of the brass stencil with the X-ACTO knife on the inside edge too difficult then trace the opening with a pencil, remove the stencil, and then proceed to cut the opening out of the card.

TECHNIQUE #2 using plastic stencils

     1) tape the plastic stencil to the appropriate sized

         cardstock

     2) trace the cutouts onto the cardstock

     3) remove the stencil and cut the openings out with

         your X-ACTO knife

     4) glue this onto another piece of cardstock or

decorative paper and then onto the face of the

         cutout card

HINT: For a different look completely, try taping the stencil directly to the front of the cutout card and proceed to cutout the openings in the stencil. The cutouts will show through to the inside of the greeting card.
